My current distro of choice in 2019 is Arch Linux. It’s modern, reliable, and gives me complete control over my system. The AUR is the easiest way to get software. Installation is advanced but a worthy learning experience.
- Kubuntu – [Newb Friendly] The best KDE experience out there in my opinion. A very customization desktop environment that will be both familiar and powerful to a new Linux user. The incredible suite of KDE based projects including Kdenlive and KDE Connect round out this amazing DE. It utilize Ubuntu at its core which makes it stable and friendly to nearly all hardware. A great choice for newbs and experienced users alike.
- MX Linux – [Newb Friendly] Nobody does Xfce quite like MX Linux. Beautiful conky integration, assistance with driver installation for Nvidia users. Fantastic gaming and all the customization and beauty of Xfce. Utilizes Debian as its foundation and this means lots of stability. One of the nicest developers on the planet so you will receive a lot of support.
- Xubuntu – [Newb Friendly] If you love an Ubuntu base and want all the amazing features Xfce offers. This is an amazingly stable and reliable choice. This distro has been my go to choice for the two years I’ve been using Linux. It is absolutely one of the top distribution you can get your hands on.
- Arch – [Advanced] Arch Linux is for more advanced users but it remains the most stable in the family. Well known for it’s incredible Arch Wiki which contains information to help you with any issue that might arise Arch is a cutting edge rolling release so you’re always using the latest and greatest Linux has to offer. Combined with the i3wm you have a complete customization at your finger-tips and powerful productivity. You have your pick of desktop environments but I recommend i3wm. i3wm while powerful will require a learning curve and some script editing to get working the way you want. If you’re still learning Linux I recommend ArcoLinux which is another amazing Arch based distro with one of the best i3wm implementations all configured for you. If you’re wanting Arch without the learning curve ArcoLinux are the way to go. Arco also has phases to help you learn overtime.
